Castel dell’Ovo (“ Egg Castle”) is the oldest Castle in Naples, located on the former island of Megaride, an old tufa rock isle later connected to the mainland, so now is a peninsula, on the Gulf of the city. The castle’s name comes from a legend narrating that the Roman poet Virgil, who had a reputation as Alchemist, put a magical egg into the foundations. Had this egg
been broken, the castle would have been destroyed and a series of disastrous events would have followed. In the 1st century BC, the Roman patrician Lucius Licinius Lucullus built a magnificent villa, later called Castellun Lucullanum, on the site. The Abbot Eugippius founded a monastery on the site after 492. The first fortification was built by the Normans in the 12th
century, the current appearance dates from the Aragonese domination in the 15th century. In the 19th century, a small fishing village called Borgo Marinaro, still exists, developed around the castle’s eastern wall. It is known for its marina and restaurant.
